Warmer weather means it’s time to start paying closer attention to water temperatures!
Several local streams, including Flat Creek and Pacific Creek, have already seen daily water temperatures exceed 65°F, and some rivers in Yellowstone are already under hoot owl closures due to warm water conditions.
At 65°F, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and Grand Teton National Park recommend anglers adjust their fishing practices to help reduce stress on trout.
As a responsible angler:
• Change your destination and fish colder-water streams.
• Fish earlier in the day when water temperatures are coolest.
• Use barbless hooks, land fish quickly, and keep fish in the water as much as possible.
Before you head out, check water temperatures at nearby USGS gages and carry a pocket thermometer to monitor conditions throughout the day. Small changes can make a big difference in protecting our fisheries.
