Supporting WGFD on Game Creek

Jackson Hole Trout Unlimited supported the Wyoming Game and Fish Department last week with the removal of non-native brook trout from Game Creek to help protect native Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat trout!

Since 2021, WGFD has successfully removed 97% of the brook trout population and recently began introducing YY brook trout, fish with two chromosomes instead of the typical XX or XY. These fish only produce male offspring, and over time, this strategy can shift the population toward all males, ultimately leading to a natural population collapse.

JHTU has supported this effort through years of hands-on removal work, and more recently, by helping fund the initial genomic profiling of wild brook trout and genetic testing of first-year offspring. We’re proud to continue playing an active role in this important conservation project!
